This should be it I think...

This week I´ve been using the ¨Feather Hi-Stainless¨ blade, reputedly one of the 2 sharpest available. It worked swimmingly. As I had assumed, the sharper blade suited me to a tee. I´m glad I gave myself time to try the others before getting to this one though, I did experience a nick with it in one spot - behind thee sideburns, and it slices skin very easily...

But aside from that, the rest of the shave was noticeably easier. Sharper blade=less pressure on razor.

So now the quest is ended.......

Victory music ahoy.

Using Shark this week. Was meh.... Oddly it had a rough feel on the face immediately after the shave, but was smooth 20 minutes later. Not as good as the derby, which is still my fave.

Or was till I moved to the last sample blade, the feather. Apparently it's the sharpest. So using it last, after some considerable practise, makes sense. More in it next week....

Using the Gillette 7 O'Clock double edged razor.

Very good shave. No complaints at all, a very good performer. Its hard to split it and the Derby, which I also liked a lot.

There's not much more to say. The one I'm now using I am not a fan of at all. It's the second last one on the list to try..... Currently it's either Gillette or Derby for the win....

Using the Astra blade last week.

Thus will be quick. It was not good at all. Still better than the Merkus of week 1, but it's a no. Shave was not smooth, regular blood spots on the face and owiness. Moved on to a gilette blade now, yes they still make them, and am quite happy with it.

Oh, I get to see my baby again on Monday too. Expect further ultrasound pics on Facebook!

Week 2 - using the Derby Extra blade.

Much better. Sharper and finer blade that meant I got a better shave with less irritation both because didn't have to run the blade over my face so many times, and also because a sharper blade requires less force to slide across your skin, so there's less 'pulling' on hairs and the top layer of skin. This was even true in the dreaded under-chin zone (the worst bit by a mile to shave properly).

It isn't quite a smooth shave down there though. That part of the face is where the grain of beard hair seems to change a billion times in a relatively small area. So I don't quite know if/how it's possible to get that bit done well at all. We shall see what happens in time.

Nonetheless, sharper does appear to be better for my face. So we'll see how the next blade (Astra) goes. It's apparently sharper still.

I've started wet shaving with an old school safety razor. For those unfamiliar, and curious, here's some info via the font of all accurate knowledge wikipedia

And here's a pretty comprehensive rationale on why one might bother to use them

I had grown sick of chucking out a piece of plastic with 3-4 shards of metal in it, an aloe vera strip and all that other crud you find in a modern cartridge razor so often. I was also sick of paying 20 bucks to get a new pack of 5 each time. So I spoke to a barber when I was getting a haircut earlier this month. I told him of how I was contemplating learning to use a straight (Cut-throat) razor, because I was sick of battery powered 7 billion bladed wasteful pieces of crap.

He said cut-throats take a lot of time and patience to master, and the can seriously hurt yourself trying. He told a story about 2 mates who decided to try and shave each other's faces with a straight razor. And one of them actually managed to slash the others throat. Needed 14 stitches or something. A vintage safety razor though, well you can start using one of those straight away and it shaves better than a disposable and over time costs a lot less, and you can't cut your own head off by accident. You throw out just the blade once a week or so.

So I got one. this one to be precise .

The point of this entry is for me to note how I find the different blades that came with it so far.

I've used the Merkur blades that came with razor first up. They were good, quite heavy cut, perhaps I need something a little sharper or thinner. I'll change over on Sunday and we'll see how it goes.

On and Chris is 16 weeks pregnant tomorrow. This is many times more significant than me and my shaving.
